Start with the problem,
then choose the approach.
The pipe serving your property and the water utility’s public main are not the same system. Before arranging work, establish where the leak is and who owns the affected equipment. Check the water provider on your bill and report suspected public-main, hydrant, or utility-side leaks directly to that provider.
When to ask about this service
- Persistent water around a private supply-line route
- Low pressure together with a suspected outside leak
- Visible damage to an exposed service connection
- A supply-line problem confirmed by a plumber or utility
Start with the location and responsibility
Explain whether water is on your property, in the street, or close to the meter. Do not dismantle or turn utility-owned equipment. The provider should distinguish private-side repairs from work requiring the utility, and establish the route before proposing access.
Compare access and replacement options
A localized repair may suit an isolated failure, while replacement may be considered for a longer damaged run. A trenchless method is an option only when the pipe, route, ground conditions, access points, and required approvals suit that method. It is not a promise of zero excavation.
Ask about the whole job
Discuss locating other buried utilities, water shutoff coordination, any required permits, testing, and restoration of paving or landscaping. Confirm what is included before work starts. This site does not provide city water service or authorize work in the public right-of-way.
What affects the cost?
Pipe length and depth, access, surface restoration, material, utility coordination, and the selected method all affect pricing. Ask for a comparison of repair and replacement when both are reasonable, including what each option excludes.
Confirm the independent provider’s identity, qualifications, and written terms. Aiven Plumb techno connects service enquiries; it does not set a provider’s repair price.
What to have ready when you call
- Where the water appears relative to the building and street
- The water provider listed on the bill
- Known pipe route, prior work, and available access
- Driveway, landscaping, tenant, or business-access constraints
